Azza Basarudin



Biography

Azza Basarudin is a researcher, writer, and gender consultant. She is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Gender Studies at UCLA and Research Affiliate at the UCLA Center for the Study of Women. Her research and teaching interests include feminist studies in Islam, gender and securitization, transnational feminisms, feminist ethnography, Human Rights and social justice advocacy with emphasis on Southeast Asia, Middle East and United States.  She is the author of Humanizing the Sacred: Sisters in Islam and the Struggle for Gender Justice in Malaysia (2015).

 Azza has held fellowships and visiting scholar positions at Harvard University, Syracuse University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and the American University in Cairo. Her work has been supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the National Science Foundation. Her essays and creative writings have appeared in journals, anthologies, and online forums. Azza is a Steering Committee member of Global Bersih, a movement for fair and clean elections in Malaysia and a founding member of a feminist task force in Southern California to tackle Islamophobia.
